DUE FRIDAY 2/2 Prep for Socratic Seminar

THIS IS MANDATORY FOR EVERYONE - Reply to this comment board for credit

1. Develop a question that you think would make for a good Socratic Seminar discussion starter that could also serve as a good essay question for Fahrenheit 451.

2. You can choose a question from one of my blog prompts or think of your own. Whether you choose one of mine or come up with your own, it has to be related to one (or more) of the following things:

A. Plot

B. Theme (Censorship)

C. Character

2. Comment here for credit, but also write it down and bring it in, in case you forget.

3. I will take a look at the questions and choose some of them for our Socratic Seminar.

4. Later, I will choose a number of essay questions based on what you wrote and let you chose which ones you would like to write about for your essay. This means you will be able to listen to a discussion and participate in a discussion before you write about the topic. BUT, you won't know the essay topic yet so you will need to pay attention to everything that is discussed.

5. Have fun! I know that some of you really got into this novel and I hope that the energy it has generated comes out in discussion! If you still have lingering questions about any aspect of it, especially regarding plot, theme, or character, then this is a great opportunity to clear that up.

What was the whole purpose of this book? Why did ray chose to right about war instead of something else?

I think a good Socratic seminar starter would first be to have anyone give input of what they thought of the book. then ask about the theme: censorship, and how they felt the book either described or portrayed it.

What was the main purpose of the book? Did it have a moral, or what could it have taught us about life?

what kind of character is Montag? Static or dynamic? Through out the novel how does Montag change his thoughts on the society?

We could have a question a little bit closer to the beginning of the book like: Why did Ray choose to bring Clarisse into the book, what were her personal traits, and how did Montag meet her?

Why did they ban books? What do you think will happen to civilization after the bomb/bombs went off? I think we should discuss many topics but mostly censorship and how Montag has changed.

Socratic Seminar Questions

What was Bradbury trying to convey? Why did he create Montag and Beatty the way that he did?

In the afterward, Bradbury talks about a deleted scene in which Beatty takes Montag to his apartment. The whole room is filled with books, but Beatty says that he has never opened a single one. How does this change his character? What is the significance of Beatty’s character?

Why were books important to society when Fahrenheit 451 was written? Why are they important now? Will they be important in the future?

How is the world that Bradbury creates the same or different from the world today? How are the characters the same or different from people today?

I also really like Dulce's questions and Chances question about the significance of Clarisse.

Is this book an actual story, or was Bradbury trying to come across a point by making this story?

I think a good Socratic seminar starter question would be: Why did the government want to keep the public ignorant? How could that make society better? Also what people thought would happen to Faber and Montag after the book ends, will there plan succeed in changing society?

How was the society in F. 451 alike or dislike modern society and/or where modern society is heading?

Why do you think Beatty hates books?

What was the point that Ray Bradbury was trying to get across? Fire is a reoccuring theme in this book. What is the significance of that? Is what the homeless men on the railroad track said true about there maybe being a time in the future where books are accepted again(does history repeat itself?) Think about the negative perception that we have now of homeless people. What does it say about this society that the people who were proffesors and had high levels of education are the ones living along the railroad track?

I STILL DONT KNOW WHAT YEAR THE STORY WAS BASED ON??? PAST....OR.....FUTURE???

Well, here are my questions. Do you think that the firemen and the government had ANY right to burn the books? By committing these acts, can they be compared to anything in our society? Was Montag truly in the wrong when he killed Beatty? If so, why?

i think like, everyone else, that it would be interesting to have a socratic seminar all about censorship and how somebody can change when they are censored for most of their life.

Do you think that the cencorship or dumbing down of books or day to day activities is something that is relevant or possible in our society today?

Jonathan V. said...

i think in the socratic seminar we should talk about what the book meant and how bradbury might have chosen this topic of censorship while writing the book.

What do you think Ray Bradbury was trying to say when he wrote this book?

Austin Han said...

What point do you think ray wanted to make when he was writing this book, was it just censorship or was there something more to it?

How do you think your life would be if you were living in a society like the one Montag lived in? Also do you think you would be one of the people who goes along with the government's rules? To the second question answer thinking about how you follow new trends, and how you truly put yourself out there in the world.

do you ever think that at the rate the technology in our world is increasing and how everyone wants to be "happy" that book could be banned. or maybe just our whole lives will become unsocial.

My question for the socratic seminar is what was thing that we learned from reading this book? or why was Clarisse such an important character in the story?

how is the world in the book similar to the world today? what things our sensored in our society that are not censored in the book? why do you think these things are censored the way they are?

Why did the character Clarisse choose to rebel in the way she did? Why did she not become 'militant'?

Is society tranforming today the say way society has already transformed in this book? Is tech soon going to brainwash everyone in the real world, as they did in the book, so they we all become isgorant and careless about everything around us?

If Montag wouldnt have murdered Beatty, what do you think wouldve happened to Montag in the future.

My question (I couldn't get it in until afterschool today because I didn't have internet last night):

Do you think society is slowly turning into that of Fahrenheit 451's society? If so, how? If not, why?

How do the people know what true happiness is if they have never lived any other way?
